Why Is Cleaning Your Pool Filter So Important?
Your filter is essentially the “kidney” of your pool. As water circulates through the system, the filter traps debris, oils, dirt, and contaminants that would otherwise float in your water or worse, sink and build up on surfaces. When the filter is clean, water flows freely, the pump runs efficiently, and your pool stays clear. When it’s dirty or clogged, your entire system starts to suffer. Here’s what can happen:
– Cloudy or dirty water: A clogged filter can’t keep up with debris and contaminants.
– Algae growth: Poor filtration means less water movement, an ideal environment for algae.
– Increased strain on equipment: Your pump has to work harder, which can lead to breakdowns or higher energy costs.
– Poor chemical effectiveness: Even the best water chemistry won’t work well if circulation is compromised.
How Often Should You Clean Your Pool Filter?
It depends on the type of filter you have and how heavily your pool is used. Here’s a general guide:
– Cartridge Filters: Clean every 4–6 weeks, or anytime your pressure gauge shows a rise of 8–10 psi above the normal level.
– Sand Filters: Backwash every 4–6 weeks, and deep clean at least once or twice a year.
– D.E. (Diatomaceous Earth) Filters: Backwash every 4–6 weeks, and do a full clean every 3 months.
Pools with heavy usage, like those at vacation rentals, apartments, or commercial properties, may need more frequent attention. Likewise, if your pool is surrounded by trees or exposed to a lot of debris, don’t wait until there’s a problem.
Signs Your Filter Needs Cleaning
Not sure if it’s time to clean your filter? Watch for these red flags:
– Water looks dull or cloudy
– Pressure gauge is reading high
– Return jets seem weak or uneven
– You’re using more chemicals than usual
– There’s an unusual smell or visible algae
